Tarrytown is a beautiful and affluent neighborhood in West Austin. The neighborhood is known to be quiet, classy and clean. Tarrytown has few restaurants and shops within its borders, but it is conveniently located just minutes from campus and downtown Austin.

The Location:
From east to west, Tarrytown extends from MoPac to Lake Austin. From north to south, Tarrytown extends from 35th Street down to Enfield. Lake Austin Boulevard is not within the Tarrytown borders, but it is very nearby and features many restaurants and businesses that are frequented by Tarrytown residents, such as Mozart’s (coffee shop on Lake Austin) and the chic restaurant Zoot.

Tarrytown residents are zoned for the Austin Independent School District, and the area also is home or nearby numerous private schools. Casis Elementary, O’ Henry Middle, and Stephen F. Austin High Schools are the main Austin ISD schools, and Tarrytown is also home to Austin’s all girls’ school, the Girls’ School of Austin.

- Casis Elementary is a kindergarten through fifth grade school, with numerous student clubs and an interactive organic garden for students and parents. Historically, it achieves an Exemplary rating from the Texas Education Agency

- O’Henry Middle School serves students from sixth through eighth grades. Historically, it is rated as Academically Acceptable.

- Known for its “Loyal Forever” school song, Austin High School is a 130-year-old school that offers a rigorous academic program alongside career-track experiences and ample extracurricular activities. Both academic and extracurricular awards are common, and many of its alumnae are distinguished.

- At the Girls’ School of Austin, admission is select, its mission to intellectually challenge girls and inspire them to achieve personal excellence and lead distinguished, fulfilling lives. Founded in 2002, the school teaches girls from kindergarten through eighth grade, and its students regularly win many awards

- While technically outside the boundaries of Tarrytown, several private schools are very close, including St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, which offers instruction for grades one through twelve; St. Austin Catholic School, which offers instruction for kindergarten through eighth grade; and The Khabele School, which offers instruction from early education through college prep. Dozens more can be found within a 15 minute drive of the neighborhood.

- In addition to grade schools, many area churches offer a variety of pre-school, daycare, and mom’s day out programs, such as at Westminster Presbyterian, Tarrytown Methodist, and St. Martin’s Lutheran.

The most common way to get around Tarrytown is by car; nearly all residents have one. Cabs do not come to this area unless you call to be picked up. Several Capital Metro bus routes pass through Tarrytown, such as Route 21. Biking is also an option!

The People of Tarrytown:
Due to the high cost of real estate and prime location, the neighborhood is predominantly populated with affluent residents. The population is primarily families of all ages, though some college students rent homes and apartments here.

Tarrytown is ripe with amenities due to its central location, history, and Austin’s overall emphasis on nature, arts, and education. A great benefit of Tarrytown is that its amenities are in a compact area that still retains a strong neighborhood feel.

Outdoor Activities:
Reed Park is a great place in Tarrytown for outdoor lovers. The six-acre park contains a playground, a swimming pool, a multipurpose field, picnic tables and a barbeque pit. There is a creek and nature trail. Tarrytown’s Lions Municipal Golf Course has been around since 1934 and has hosted many famous golfer’s, such as Austin native Ben Crenshaw. The Mayfield Preserve is a 22-acre park on the edge of Tarrytown that offers beautiful gardens, colorful peacocks and ponds with water lilies.

Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail, along the shores of Lake Austin, is just east of Tarrytown and offers miles of water view and city view trails that are always filled with Austin’s active human and pet populations. The lake also has a kayaking station, as well as opportunities for other sporting activities, like stand up paddle boarding and paddle boats.

Austin Museum of Art at Laguna Gloria: The grounds of Laguna Gloria along Lake Austin were home to Native Americans and later were owned by Stephen F. Austin (one of Texas’ founding fathers and namesake of Austin.) In 1943, Clara Driscoll donated Laguna Gloria to be used as an art museum, and today it offers exhibitions, classes, and events.

Coffee Shops and Restaurants:
As it is primarily residential, there are not many restaurants or coffee shops within the neighborhood besides a Starbuck’s. However, there is Food Food, a charming bakery and cafe with sandwiches, entrees, and sweets for either dining in or take-away. They also sell to-go casseroles and salads that serve 10-12. There is also Texenza Coffee, which was once a Seattle's Best, in Tarrytown. They offer a large variety of coffee and espresso drinks in addition to pastries, sandwiches, and salads. They also have free Wi-Fi.

Opened the day before the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941, independent Tarrytown Pharmacy has weathered the decades well, with ample support from the community.

Real Estate:
Tarrytown has everything from 1920s cottages to new mansions, but it predominantly consists of large, older homes. Real estate in Tarrytown tends to be pricey, though all come with a hefty pricetag. There are several high-end apartment complexes and condominiums in Tarrytown that make it possible to live there for less. Homes are an eclectic and charming mix of smaller, early-twentieth century cottages and larger, fully updated modern luxury estates.- Courtesy of Austin Title
